ALDI Looks to Quickly Build and Hire in New Ulm as Part of German Company's Expansion Goals

ALDI in Germany

NEW ULM (Mankato Gazette Newspaper)—ALDI will build a new grocery store location in New Ulm and the company's Faribault Division Vice President Matt Lilla answered some questions about ALDI's aspirations in the Minnesota small city for the Mankato Gazette.

Q: What business goals does ALDI have for the area?
A: We’ve been selling groceries in the US for 40 years, and our growth and success is owed to our unique business model: offering fresh, high-quality groceries at everyday low prices. That’s why we’re one of the fastest growing retailers in the US. Because shoppers who love a great value are everywhere, and New Ulm is no exception. What we hear from our customers more and more is that when they discover that shopping at ALDI can save time and money without sacrificing quality, they’re hooked.

Q: What will the cost be for the new location?
A: As a private company, ALDI doesn’t release financial information. But I can tell you we look at a lot of factors before choosing an ALDI location, like population density, proximity to competition, cost of the property and traffic patterns. We want to be conveniently located for our shoppers.

Q: How many employees will work there?
A: ALDI streamlines its approach to staffing, creating cost-saving efficiencies that are passed onto customers. Each store employs about 10 to 20 people. As an employer of choice, offering wages and benefits that are higher than those of other retailers in the market, our hiring events attract a high number of candidates. Also, part-time staff working at least 25 hours per week receives full health insurance benefits and dental coverage, and all ALDI employees are invited to participate in our 401(k) program. We’re proud that our commitment to our employees makes us an employer of choice.

We’re looking to fill 12 Store Associate and Shift Manager positions for our upcoming store in New Ulm. The starting wage for Store Associates is $12.00 per hour and $16.50 per hour for Shift Managers—well above the Minnesota state minimum wage of $9.00 per hour.

Q: How large is the new location planned to be?
A: At ALDI, you’ll find a smaller selling space that’s about 10,000-11,000 square feet with four to five aisles. Today’s ALDI stores are also built with environmentally-friendly materials – like energy-saving refrigeration and LED lighting. We’re an easy-to-shop grocery store that saves shoppers money on the groceries they buy the most. Customers will find fresh meat, bread, dairy, produce and household items at ALDI while saving up to 50 percent on their grocery bill.

Q: Who are the local construction companies and contractors that worked on the location?
A: The general contractor for the new store is Shingobee Builders.
-End of Interview-

The US ALDI headquarters is in Batavia, Illinois. The company opened its first store in the US in the 1970s and the company started (and remains) in Germany more than 100 years ago. It celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2014. More than 90 percent of New Ulm's residents have German ancestry. In 1946, the company split in two as ALDI Nord (North) and ALDI Sud (South). According to reports, the company plans to aggressively expand in the US with a plan to open 650 stores throughout the country by around 2020.
